Please read below about the ethical and waste standards around products made with leather and real butterflies and also familiarize yourself with the 'Ever Renewed Program', a take back initiative offering customers rewards and discounts.

As an individual running this business, I cannot be perfect but I will try my best to always be educating myself and applying ways to be more mindful about how I make my art and run this business. I will do my best to keep this page updated as my business grows and changes. Please email me (themangledmomarch@gmail.com) with any feedback, suggestions, or resources you feel inclined to share.

Thanks!

BUTTERFLY TRANSPARENCY RECORDS
DSCN2415_edited.jpg

All butterflies are real and have passed away naturally after living a long full life. They are laminated in a high-quality UV lamination sheet to protect the specimens from sun/water damage and to give them strength for daily wear.

The ethical standards of  Mangled Monarch the Atelier is to only source butterflies that have passed naturally or have been acquired secondhand. This brand will not work with any company that euthanizes. This brand will also never use specimens that are protected by the endangered species act nor will this brand use specimens considered "rare" or "collectible". Using real butterflies is a privilege. The priority is to honor and respect the creatures lives by giving them a beautiful second.

The butterflies used in this art may come with damaged wings, scratches, or other imperfections. This is an indicator that the butterfly was allowed to live its natural life cycle and we celebrate these character marks.

LEATHER TRANSPARENCY RECORDS

The leather used at Mangled Monarch Atelier is considered pre-consumer "waste". What is pre-consumer waste? It is waste that is discarded in a production process before it was available for consumer use. Think scraps, trimmings, samples, quality control rejects, and deadstock from the design process of your favorite fashion brands. The leather is from the fashion and textile industry of NYC. By using this leather deemed pre-consumer waste by big fashion brands it is diverted from landfill and given a second life without being "second hand". The leather is high quality, luxury, designer leather from labels such as Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, or Steve Madden. This leather is made available to small businesses like Mangled Monarch Atelier, through emerging textile recycle businesses.

The ethical standard of Mangled Monarch Atelier is to only use salvaged leathers. This brand will never use leathers that are protected by the endangered species act nor will this brand use leathers considered "rare" or "exotic" including but not limited to snake skins, alligator/crocodile skins, kangaroo skins, deer skins, or any animal consider "wild". 95% of the leather skins are by-products of the meat industry such a cowhides, pigskins, sheepskins, or goat skins. At Mangled Monarch Atelier we consider using leather as a way to bring peace and honor to that animal's life. There is a zero-waste standard when it comes to designing with leather. No leather scraps or offcuts from the design process go to trash. All scraps no matter how small are saved and used for alternative art projects such as doll clothes or mixed media fine art. Scraps that are too small to use in other creative ways are stored and waiting for the textile technology to arrive that allows processed leathers to be safely composted.

EVER RENEWED PROGRAM

'Ever Renewed' is a take-back program that gives discounts and rewards to customers who bring back their old pieces. When you bring back your well-loved pieces Mangled Monarch Atelier is able to make them into something else so these resources and materials never go to waste.

Mangled Monarch Atelier is mission-driven to be a part of the circular economy. What is the circular economy? A circular economy is a closed-loop structure between design, production, and customer that allows for products to be continuously repurposed. The goal is to extend the life cycle of any given resource or product.

Mangled Monarch Atelier items remade from the Ever Renewed Program will be clearly marked on any listing and will come with a product history label so the story of the product's life can be told. Pretty cool right?! But this program cannot exist without your participation. By turning in your well-loved Mangled Monarch Atelier products you are helping to end wasteful, toxic, and dangerous cycles of consumerism in the fashion industry. Together we can create a future that becomes ever more sustainable, clean, and beautiful.
